The story

In 1943, Berlin worker Kurt Hartung serves as a corporal in the German Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front. Critical of Germany’s war of aggression, he is held in low regard by his superiors and assigned dangerous tasks, including defusing unexploded bombs. Captured by Soviet forces while scouting, Hartung meets Soviet First Lieutenant Netrebin, who tries to make him understand the nature of Germany’s war. Hartung is persuaded to join two Soviet soldiers in a risky plan to abduct a German officer, setting three soldiers from opposing sides on an uneasy shared mission.
