A disguised married artist infiltrates a woman-hating recluse’s castle to change his ways.

The story

Bodo von Bocksberg is an eccentric recluse and a declared woman-hater, barring women from his property. He indulges his love of music by inviting four like-minded men to his castle each week for chamber music. When one member admits he is engaged, Bodo expels him from their circle. Helene von Bocksdorf, a married artist, arrives at the estate disguised as a man, determined to turn the group away from its misogyny. Her efforts focus on Bodo, the leader of the circle and the uncle of her husband, Edgar.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Bodo von Bocksberg is quite the woman-hater: women are not allowed to set foot on his property. To indulge his “hobby,” music, the eccentric recluse invites four like-minded men to his castle every week, where the quintet performs chamber music. One evening, one of the participants sheepishly admits that he has become engaged. Outraged, the “renegade” is promptly cast out of their circle and banished from the castle. To turn the woman-haters away from their ways, the married artist Helene von Bocksdorf one day arrives at the estate disguised as a man and sets about converting the eccentric recluse from his misogyny. She even manages to persuade the leader of the woman-haters—who is also the uncle of her own husband, Edgar von Bocksdorf—to become engaged to her. So as not to take things too far, Helene immediately breaks off her engagement to the duped and disgraced Bodo, who has now been cured of his misogyny. The old man is nevertheless immensely relieved that his nephew Edgar is willing to take his wife Helene back without making much of a fuss about it.
