A man with short-term memory loss uses a complex system of notes and tattoos to track his search for the man who destroyed his life.

The story

Leonard Shelby is a man suffering from anterograde amnesia, a condition that prevents him from forming new long-term memories. To navigate his life and pursue the man he believes is responsible for his wife's murder and his own condition, he relies on a meticulous system of notes, photographs, and tattoos. The narrative is presented in a unique non-linear structure, alternating between black-and-white sequences shown chronologically and color sequences presented in reverse order. This structure mirrors the protagonist's fractured mental state as he attempts to piece together the truth of his past and identify the perpetrator, whom he refers to as 'John G.'

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film follows Leonard Shelby, who uses a system of notes and tattoos to track his search for 'John G,' the man he believes murdered his wife. The story is told through two interleaved timelines: a chronological black-and-white sequence and a reverse-chronology color sequence. In the color scenes, Leonard meets Natalie, a bartender who helps him find 'John G' but ultimately leads him into a trap. He also interacts with Teddy, a man he believes is a contact, but who is actually an undercover cop. The two timelines converge when Leonard realizes that Teddy has been manipulating his condition to facilitate drug deals. The final revelation shows that Leonard's wife actually survived the initial attack, and he had been manipulated into a cycle of self-deception. He eventually chooses to continue his 'quest' to maintain his own sense of purpose, even though he knows he is being deceived.
