A contentedly single artist revisits old relationships when her daughter’s wedding raises an unexpected question about who will walk her down the aisle.

The story

Anna, a freelance artist in Munich in her early forties, is content with her single life until her daughter Clara’s boyfriend asks Clara to marry him. The engagement prompts Anna to realize that no one has ever asked her to marry. Clara wants her father, Vangelis, to walk her down the aisle, but he is notoriously unreliable. With her friend Daisy, Anna turns to a list of former partners and asks them to take on the role; they are all married now and each refuses. As wedding preparations proceed, mother and daughter clash, while new and old romantic prospects complicate Anna’s thoughts about love and marriage.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Anna is in her early forties. She enjoys working as a freelance artist in Munich and is actually quite content with her single life. When her daughter Clara’s boyfriend asks for Clara’s hand in marriage, Anna suddenly realizes that no one has ever asked her. Another question arises: who can walk Clara down the aisle? Clara would like to see her father, Vangelis, in that role, but he is notoriously unreliable. So, with her friend Daisy, Anna goes through the list of her past relationships and tries asking the men to take on the role. By now, they are all married themselves, and each turns Anna down. The wedding preparations create plenty of potential for conflict, and Anna and Clara argue several times. Meanwhile, men are vying for Anna’s attention. There is the womanizer Albert, who was seated next to her at the engagement party and has successfully proposed to four women using diamond rings. Then there is her high-school sweetheart, Robert, whom she has suddenly run into again. He left her back then, which deeply hurt Anna. Daisy herself wants nothing more than for Leo to finally propose to her. Anna tries to persuade Leo. He sees marriage as an institution that does not have to have anything to do with romance. He also does not see his relationship with Daisy as a hierarchical one. Through this conversation, Anna realizes that she has always wanted to be the boss. It turns out that Robert proposed to her back then with graffiti, but Anna never saw it. Anna and Clara talk things out and reconcile. Leo finally does propose to Daisy, and Anna decides to leave herself open to being asked by men, too. In the end, Clara chooses Anna to walk her down the aisle. At the wedding reception, Anna catches the bridal bouquet. When Albert asks if he may marry her, Anna replies, “Absolutely not.” But she tells him never to stop asking her.
