Danish musician Kim Larsen plays the lead role of Benny, who, together with his best friend Arnold (Erik Clausen), is one of two childhood friends who have become homeless after capitalists demolished their former home to build new apartments. Together with other homeless people, they establish a so-called community called “Haveje” (Hawaii) in Sydhavnen. The film follows life in the free town and the problems that arise both within it and in its dealings with the surrounding society. Over the course of the story, Benny falls in love with Susan, played by Birgitte Raaberg. When Arnold later falls in love with her too and also runs for political office, tensions escalate, and the two friends’ relationship is put to the test.
