A young ex-convict in Milan tries to rescue his cousin from a prostitution racket while a police commissioner hopes to use him against its Mafia boss.

The story

After serving six years in prison for robbery, young Sicilian Pino Scalise settles in Milan with his uncle Nicola and cousins Teresa and Marina. A visit to a brothel with his friend Gazosa reveals that Marina has been coerced into prostitution by a gang led by Mafia boss Don Ciccio, whose circle includes Gazosa. Pino resolves to get Marina out of the racket. Commissioner Morani, expecting Pino to return to criminal activity, gives him a driver’s license in hopes of using him to uncover Don Ciccio’s operations. Meanwhile, Pino finds work as a driver for an artificial-flower company through his uncle, but Don Ciccio soon puts pressure on him.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Pino Scalise, a young Sicilian who has just served six years in prison for robbery, settles in Milan with his uncle Nicola, who lives with his daughters Teresa and Marina. When he goes with his friend “Gazosa” to a brothel, he discovers that his cousin Marina has been brainwashed and forced into prostitution by the gang of Mafia boss Don Ciccio, of which Gazosa is also a member. Pino therefore decides to take action to get Marina out of the racket. Commissioner Morani, convinced that the ex-convict will return to the criminal organization, gives him a driver’s license in the hope that Pino will lead him to Don Ciccio’s shady dealings. Don Ciccio soon blackmails Pino, who, in the meantime, has obtained a job as a driver for an artificial-flower company through his uncle Nicola. Pino is forced to drive a truck that Don Ciccio has made him load with drugs. Meanwhile, Marina is freed by Virginia, another prostitute, who later dies in a road accident. Don Ciccio has Gazosa killed because he considers him responsible for what happened, while Domino, Don Ciccio’s right-hand man, kidnaps Teresa. Before the shipment crosses the Swiss border, the police intercept it, but during the raid Uncle Nicola is killed by a stray bullet. With Pino’s help—by now a police informant—Morani lays a trap for Don Ciccio. Enraged, Don Ciccio attacks Domino, who kills him with a knife during the struggle and tries to escape, but Pino stops and beats him, and the commissioner finally arrests him. The film ends with Pino and Teresa deciding to start a new life together.
