An English fashion model in Rome accidentally contacts a long-shuttered listening center whose dead occupants begin haunting her.
The story
An English fashion model is working in Rome and tries to reconnect with a man she has been out with. From a bar’s pay phone, she accidentally dials the number of a listening center for lonely people that has been closed for years. The call awakens spirits who died by suicide after receiving no comfort there. Using the phones as their channel, the dead—who remain in the center’s disused rooms—begin haunting the model relentlessly. They also kill people who get between them and her. A young university student she has recently met understands what is happening and becomes her only source of help as she struggles to escape the spirits’ grasp.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
An English fashion model is in Rome for work. While trying to get back in touch with a man she has been out with, she accidentally dials, from a bar’s pay phone, the number of a listening center for lonely people that has been closed for years. This awakens the spirits of people who committed suicide after finding no comfort at the center. The phones become the channel of communication between the dead, who dwell in the disused rooms of the center, and the unfortunate woman. They begin to haunt her relentlessly and kill anyone who gets between them and the girl. The only help comes from a young university student she has recently met, who understands the situation and helps the protagonist save herself. To escape the situation into which she has been plunged, the girl must give the spirits what they had always lacked: the feeling of being loved. From a phone booth, the protagonist dials the center’s number, this time on purpose, and tells all the spirits that she loves them. At that point, the spirits can finally rest in peace, and a liberating flock of pigeons bursts out of the windows of the old building that housed the center.
