Full plot (contains spoilers)
Profiler Jake Harris leads a group of FBI agents—Sara Moore, Lucas Harper, Nicole Willis, Vince Sherman, Bobby Whitman, and Rafe Perry—to an island off the coast of North Carolina for a final training exercise. They are joined by Gabe Jensen, an outside observer. The simulation involves tracking a fictional killer, 'The Puppeteer,' in a mock town. The exercise turns real when J.D. Reston, an experienced agent, is killed by a liquid nitrogen trap. The group discovers broken clocks at crime scenes, indicating a real killer is hunting them based on specific times. Suspicions fall on Gabe, but the group is drugged and Rafe is murdered. The killer leaves letters spelling 'Croatoan.' Nicole is killed by an acid-laced cigarette. Harris is found dead, strung up like a marionette. During a chaotic confrontation, Lucas is shot but survives due to a bulletproof vest. Sara eventually subdues Gabe and discovers Lucas is the killer. Lucas, seeking 'worthy prey' after killing his parents, tries to drown Sara, but she shoots him dead. Gabe and Sara escape the island via a U.S. Navy helicopter.
