Full plot (contains spoilers)
De Waterhoek is a hamlet on the Scheldt that stands to lose its peace when the authorities decide to build a bridge across the river. Most of the villagers oppose the project, while some see it as a source of livelihood through modernization. Caught between the two sides is the sensual Mira, who keeps company with any man who wears trousers—including her own uncle, the son of the leader of the resistance to the bridge construction. Her uncle is arrested, and Mira marries the engineer building the bridge, but this seems like a hopeless existence. In the end, Mira goes her own way.
