After a cataclysm leaves two girls without homes, a kind older woman shelters them in a house said to care for lost travelers.
The story
In the wake of a cataclysm, 17-year-old Yui, who has run away from an abusive home, and eight-year-old Hiyori, who has lost her family and her voice, have nowhere to go. They meet Kiwa, a strange old woman who takes them in at her somewhat dilapidated house overlooking the sea, a Mayoiga. Though the girls join her on a whim, they find comfort in the house, which legend says cares for lost travelers, and in Kiwa’s warm hospitality. Their wounded hearts begin to heal, and the chance to start over brings relief. Then strange phenomena begin around the house: curious beaked beings appear, along with a seemingly threatening black snake.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the wake of a cataclysm, two young girls find themselves separated from their respective families. They do not know each other and have nowhere to live. Yui, 17, who has run away from an abusive home, and Hiyori, 8, who has lost her family and her voice, have nowhere to go when they meet Kiwa, a strange old woman. She decides to take them in and offer them shelter in her home, which lies apart from the village. It is an old, somewhat dilapidated house overlooking the sea—a Mayoiga. Although the two girls joined Kiwa on a whim, they find comfort in the house, which legend says cares for lost travelers, and in Kiwa’s warm hospitality. The girls’ wounded hearts begin to heal little by little. For them, the chance to start over is a great relief—until strange phenomena begin to occur. Strange beings with pointed beaks, whom Kiwa calls “Fushigitto,” appear all around the house. Their bizarre appearance frightens Hiyori at first, but they turn out to be harmless. A black snake with red eyes, however, which appears and disappears in an instant, seems malevolent and threatening.
