The story
In a provincial town in Jutland, Solvej, an early retiree and former beauty queen, lives in isolation, keeping to familiar routines and nursing old, shattered dreams. She rides her mobility scooter with her dog, Poul Reichhardt, and supplements her pension by selling prescription pills locally. Her neighbor’s daughter, Kate, is a rootless, boundary-pushing 17-year-old with little sense of what to do with her life. Bored, Kate breaks into Solvej’s apartment, but Solvej catches her by surprise. Their confrontation sets off a game of mutual suspicion, while an unexpected friendship begins to take shape.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In a provincial town in Jutland, there appears to be nothing new under the sun. Solvej, an early retiree and former beauty queen, lives in complete isolation, sticking to familiar routines and nurturing old, shattered dreams. She putters around on her mobility scooter with her dog, Poul Reichhardt, and supplements her early-retirement pension by selling her prescription pills in the local area. Her neighbor’s daughter, Kate, a rootless, boundary-pushing 17-year-old, has no idea what to do with herself or her life. In a fit of boredom, she breaks into the neighboring apartment, but Solvej catches her by surprise. A game now begins over who is cheating whom, but an unexpected friendship also develops. Perhaps life has more to offer them both, if only they dare.
