Full plot (contains spoilers)
Ethan Hunt, a retired IMF agent, is recruited by Director John Musgrave to rescue Lindsey Farris, who was captured while investigating arms dealer Owen Davian. During a rescue in Berlin, Lindsey is killed by a hidden explosive. A microdot on a postcard she sent Ethan reveals a warning about Davian and a conspiracy involving IMF Director Theodore Brassel. Ethan marries his fiancée, Julia, and embarks on an unofficial mission to capture Davian in Vatican City. After a failed attempt to secure Davian, Julia is kidnapped. Davian demands the 'Rabbit's Foot,' a biological hazard, in exchange for Julia's life. Ethan travels to Shanghai to retrieve the item, where he is captured and implanted with a similar explosive. He discovers that Musgrave is the traitor working with Davian. Ethan eventually locates Julia and faces Davian in a final confrontation. He defeats Davian and saves Julia, while Julia kills the traitor Musgrave. The film ends with Ethan and Julia preparing for their honeymoon.
