The story
IMF Agent Ethan Hunt intercepts a shipment of nerve gas being moved from Minsk by The Syndicate, a secret consortium of rogue field operatives from various intelligence agencies that he has been tracking. At an IMF station in London, The Syndicate compromises the briefing. Before being gassed unconscious, he is forced to watch a blond man wearing glasses kill the station operative. In Washington D.C., CIA Director Alan Hunley convinces a Senate committee to decommission the IMF and assimilate all the assets into the CIA after their actions caused destructive events in Russia. Agents Benji Dunn and William Brandt are forced to work for the CIA under strict scrutiny, while hacker Luther Stickell resigns in protest.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After being tortured by ex-KGB agent Janik "Bone Doctor" Vinter, Ethan Hunt escapes with the help of Ilsa Faust, an undercover MI6 agent. Six months later, as a wanted fugitive, Ethan coordinates with Benji Dunn to track the man who attacked the London station. During a performance at the Vienna State Opera, they encounter Ilsa and Syndicate agents. Ethan prevents an assassination attempt on the Chancellor of Austria but is forced to flee with Benji and Ilsa. The CIA, led by Alan Hunley, declares the IMF disbanded and labels Ethan a fugitive. Benji and Ethan eventually find Ilsa in Casablanca, where she identifies the leader of The Syndicate as Solomon Lane. They infiltrate an underwater vault to retrieve a digital ledger of Syndicate operatives. Later, the team joins forces with Luther Stickell and William Brandt. They travel to London to retrieve a 'red box' containing data. In Oxford, they confront the Prime Minister to obtain biometrics to unlock the data. They discover the box contains £2.4 billion in accounts. Ethan destroys the data to prevent Lane from funding the Syndicate. In a final confrontation at the Tower of London, Ethan faces Lane and Vinter. After the mission's success, Hunley convinces the Senate to restore the IMF, and Brandt is named the new IMF Secretary.
