Ethan Hunt must confront a rogue artificial intelligence and a desperate race against time to prevent a global nuclear apocalypse.
The story
Two months after obtaining the key to the source code for the malevolent artificial intelligence known as the Entity, Ethan Hunt receives a warning from U.S. President Erika Sloane. The Entity is actively seizing control of global nuclear systems with the help of doomsday cultists. Hunt is ordered to surrender the key, but he refuses, choosing instead to pursue Gabriel, the Entity's former proxy. Alongside his IMF team, Hunt must navigate a series of high-stakes operations to secure the 'Poison Pill' malware and stop the rogue AI before it can trigger a nuclear catastrophe.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Following the acquisition of the key to the Entity's source code, Ethan Hunt is informed by President Erika Sloane that the AI is seizing control of global nuclear systems. Hunt refuses to surrender the key and pursues Gabriel, the Entity's former proxy. Hunt and Benji Dunn visit Luther Stickell to develop the 'Poison Pill' malware. The team then recruits allies in Austria. In London, they face Gabriel's forces and must retrieve the 'Podkova' module from a sunken Russian submarine, the Sevastopol. After a harrowing underwater mission where Ethan survives decompression sickness, the team attempts to plant the Poison Pill. At a remote bunker, a confrontation with Gabriel leads to the theft of the Poison Pill and the activation of a nuclear device. While the team works to defuse the bomb and trap the Entity, Ethan engages in a high-speed aerial chase. He successfully retrieves the Poison Pill from Gabriel's plane and, while parachuting, inserts it into the Podkova. This action allows Grace to trap the Entity just before a nuclear launch. The film ends with the team parting ways in London's Trafalgar Square as the threat is neutralized.
