The story
At a children’s service in Lemheim, northern Germany, twelve-year-old Ulja presents her discovery of an asteroid that will hit Earth soon, but her presentation is cut short. Even the most outlandish contributions at the service earn applause. Highly intelligent and scientifically minded, she is seen by the congregation—and especially her Russian-German grandmother Olga—as going astray and needing to be “saved.” After Olga has the pastor confiscate Ulja’s technical equipment, Ulja sets off with her classmate Henk in the family hearse toward Belarus, where the asteroid is expected to strike.

Lemheim Free Church, northern Germany: At the children’s service, even the most outlandish contributions earn applause; only twelve-year-old Ulja’s presentation about an asteroid she has discovered, which will hit Earth in a short time, is cut short. In the eyes of the congregation—and especially those of her Russian-German grandmother Olga—the highly intelligent, scientifically minded Ulja is going astray and must be “saved.” After Olga has the pastor confiscate her granddaughter’s technical equipment, Ulja sets off for Belarus with her classmate Henk in the family hearse, heading for the place where the asteroid will strike. A bizarre chase ensues, bringing the congregation’s various conflicts to light, with individuals repeatedly being left behind. Finally, after several misunderstandings, they force their way across the Belarusian border. The asteroid strikes exactly as Ulja predicted and injures the pastor so badly that he can no longer wield his backward influence in the future.
