Moana must assemble a wayfinding crew to find a lost island and break a curse that threatens her people's survival.
The story
Three years after becoming a wayfinder, Moana is named Motunui's first master wayfinder in a thousand years. Upon receiving a vision from her ancestor, Tautai Vasa, she learns that a malicious storm god, Nalo, has hidden a legendary island called Motufetu, and her people will go extinct unless she can find it. Moana assembles a crew—including a craftswoman, a historian, and a grumpy farmer—to follow a comet's path across the ocean. Meanwhile, the demigod Maui is captured by Nalo's enforcer, Matangi. Moana and her crew must navigate dangerous waters and face pirate-like Kakamora to find Maui and reach the lost land.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Three years after becoming a wayfinder, Moana is named the first master wayfinder of Motunui in a millennium. A vision from her ancestor, Tautai Vasa, reveals that the storm god Nalo submerged the island of Motufetu, severing the connection between the people and the ocean. To save her people from extinction, Moana assembles a crew—Loto, Moni, and Kele—to follow a comet toward Motufetu. Simultaneously, the demigod Maui is captured by Nalo's enforcer, Matangi. Moana's crew is captured by the Kakamora pirates but eventually finds Maui. After a perilous journey where they are ambushed by Nalo's monsters and stranded on an island, Moana and Maui plan to raise Motufetu. During a final confrontation, Nalo strips Maui of his powers. Moana dives into the ocean to touch Motufetu; though struck by Nalo's lightning, she is revived as a demigoddess by the spirits of her ancestors. Maui regains his powers, and together they raise Motufetu, reconnecting the people of the ocean. The film ends with a celebration on Motunui, while Nalo prepares for revenge with the crab Tamatoa.
