Full plot (contains spoilers)
This ensemble film tells several love stories. First, there is Vincent, who tries to make Marianne succumb to his charms. She is already in love with another man out of spite. The young woman, an artist, keeps her distance from this man, who has everything going for him and is confident in his powers of seduction. In real life, on New Year’s Eve, Elsa realizes she is in love with a man who shamelessly cheats on her and refuses to commit. Desperate, she nevertheless decides to leave him. Three years later, she meets Jérôme at a business appointment and tries to flirt with him, unaware that the young man is gay. When she finds out, she resigns herself to being just his friend, but Jérôme falls under her spell. They begin an intensely close relationship, until the young woman starts to feel suffocated by so much love. That same New Year’s Eve, at the same club as Elsa, Éric comes to beg Marie to take him back. Marie, depressed and selfish, does not know where to turn. Three years later, Eric has moved on and is in a relationship with Anne. By chance, he sees Marie again. She is desperate: her partner is infertile, and they cannot have a child. At her pleading, Eric agrees to father a child with her. Anne leaves him, realizing that he has not managed to get over Marie. Eric thinks he has won Marie back, and she falls into his arms before leaving him again. Finally, the following New Year’s Eve, Éric and Elsa cross paths at the cinema while going to see Modern Love, without realizing where they might have seen each other before.
