The story
Hank Grotowski and his son Sonny are correction officers in a Georgia prison. Hank, the deputy warden, oversees the execution of Lawrence Musgrove. While the execution looms, Hank's life is complicated by his strained relationship with his son and his father, a prejudiced retired officer. Following a tragic incident involving his son, Hank's life takes a turn when he encounters Leticia, the grieving widow of the man he executed. The two begin a relationship, unaware of the shared, tragic connection between their pasts and the roles they played in the events leading to their current circumstances.

Hank Grotowski and his son Sonny work as correction officers in a Georgia prison. Hank's father, Buck, is a racist retired officer. During the execution of Lawrence Musgrove, Sonny is traumatized and later assaulted by Hank for his reaction. The following morning, a violent confrontation leads to Sonny taking his own life. Hank later meets Leticia, the widow of Musgrove, after she is left alone following her son Tyrell's death in a car accident. The two begin a relationship, with Hank hiding his role in her husband's execution. After a series of events including a confrontation with Buck and the discovery of Musgrove's drawings, Leticia eventually learns the truth of Hank's involvement. Despite the revelation, the two remain together, finding solace in their shared grief.
