After a man is found murdered near Husum, a local investigator is drawn into the case when a federal agent identifies the victim and asks him to join her in Berlin.

The story

Near Husum, Hans Jacoby is found shot dead and tied to a chair. Local investigator Anton Glauberg takes charge and hears that a red convertible with Berlin plates was seen nearby. Paula Reinhardt of the Federal Criminal Police Office arrives and identifies the dead man as Hans Wolgast, a member of the RAF who had apparently settled in the area. She asks Glauberg to accompany her to Berlin to investigate Wolgast’s activities there. Glauberg conceals that Wolgast was his half-brother, though Reinhardt already knows. In Berlin, Glauberg begins investigating on his own and points Reinhardt toward an unsolved 1978 murder he believes may be connected.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Near Husum, Hans Jacoby is found shot dead in his house, tied to a chair. Anton Glauberg of the local criminal investigation department takes charge of the initial inquiries and learns from a witness that, shortly beforehand, he had seen a red convertible with Berlin license plates near the house. A little later, Paula Reinhardt from the Federal Criminal Police Office arrives and tells Glauberg that the dead man is Hans Wolgast, a member of the RAF who had supposedly settled down here. Because of Wolgast’s activities in the Berlin scene, Reinhardt wants Glauberg to accompany her there. Glauberg keeps from his colleague the fact that the dead man was his half-brother and that he therefore has a personal interest in solving the case, but she has already been informed of their relationship by her superior. The BKA hopes Glauberg’s involvement will help them make faster progress in the search for the killer. Once in Berlin, they check into a hotel, and Glauberg immediately starts investigating on his own. He visits Veith Seewald, who asks him what became of his brother’s former housemates. Glauberg quickly realizes that the BKA is keeping him under surveillance, but it does not put him off. He draws Reinhardt’s attention to an old murder case from 1978, which he believes is connected to the current case. They first look into the victim’s former circle and discover that Wolgast had worked for both the Stasi and the BKA. Even so, Glauberg believes the 1978 murder of Christian Curland is the key to solving the case. Curland was shot in the head in the street after attending the opera. The case has never been solved, and his companion was never traced. After Glauberg gets Veith to confirm his suspicion that his brother shot Curland, he wonders whose desire for revenge could have lasted 25 years. Curland’s wife is not a possibility, since she is now severely disabled and confined to a wheelchair. Glauberg then realizes that Curland’s companion was his seven-year-old daughter, Paula. She had to watch her father die before her eyes. Paula Reinhardt later joined the BKA so she could keep working there until she found her father’s murderer. Glauberg confronts Reinhardt with his theory, gets confirmation, and has her taken into custody.
