A psychiatrist on holiday helps investigate a real-estate agent’s murder, only to find that nearly everyone around the victim had a motive.
The story
Psychiatrist Wendelin Winter travels to Gran Canaria with his daughter, Alexandra. There, German real-estate agent Marquardt hosts a party that Winter attends. The next day, Marquardt is dead, and Winter finds the body and helps Inspector Costa-Cruz investigate. A number of people may have reasons to resent the agent: a car-rental agent owed him money, a notary had argued with him, his brother hated him, and his girlfriend had recently been shouted at. A German doctor also knows Marquardt was incurably ill. As the investigation proceeds, Winter faces a growing list of possible suspects.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Psychiatrist Wendelin Winter travels to Gran Canaria with his daughter Alexandra. There, the German real estate agent Marquardt hosts a party, which Winter also attends. The next day, the agent is dead. Winter finds the body and assists Inspector Costa-Cruz with his investigation. Almost everyone has a motive: car-rental agent Bilfinger owed the deceased money. Notary Mendez had argued with Marquardt. His brother Dieter hated him. And his girlfriend Sonja had recently been shouted at by him. The pretty German doctor Katharina also knows that Marquardt was incurably ill. Soon afterward, Dieter and Mendez are murdered. Winter then visits Sonja on her boat. There, Winter notices that Sonja is wearing a blue scarf. In a sudden flashback, Winter remembers finding the fringe of a blue scarf clenched in the dead man's fist. Sonja confesses to murdering the brothers and the lawyer. Disappointed, she learns that Marquardt would have died soon anyway and that she would have inherited everything. Sonja flies into a rage and tries to kill Wendelin with a knife, but her scarf gets caught in the anchor mechanism and she strangles herself.
