Fifteen-year-old Moritz is in the midst of puberty as his parents’ bankruptcy puts the family’s home, a huge villa on Hamburg’s Elbchaussee, at risk. Left to fend for himself, the lonely boy seeks contact with others. His grandmother, once a central person in his life, has been sent by his parents to a nursing home, where she is neglected and bullied by carers who have little time for her. Full plot (contains spoilers)

Moritz is fifteen years old and in the midst of puberty. His parents are facing a financial crisis. The family still lives in a huge villa on Hamburg’s Elbchaussee, but it is only a matter of time before they have to leave, because his parents are bankrupt. During this time, Moritz is left to fend for himself. The lonely boy seeks contact with others. His grandmother, once a central figure in his life, has been shunted off to a nursing home by his parents. There, she languishes in appalling conditions and is bullied by the carers, who have no time for her. Moritz feels similarly lonely. When he visits her, she asks him to help her die. Moritz is also disturbed by the behavior of his aunt, who lives in the house with them, as she has more than just friendly, familial feelings toward him. When she also makes sexual advances toward Moritz, he once again flees the adult world. The only thing he seems to have left is his dreams, in which he brutally takes revenge on those around him. Change only seems possible when he meets the kind Barbara and a rock band. His new friends show him an alternative path, away from his parents and toward a new family.
