The story

Elaine and David Briand live with their daughter in an isolated, modern house in a rainy hamlet near the Swiss border. Their marriage is under strain: David is struggling financially and often away for work, while Elaine feels bored and regrets leaving her important job in Paris. One rainy day, the Bronskis arrive in a caravan outside their property. Mr. Bronski has lost an arm and walks with a limp after a construction-site accident that killed seven workers; he holds David, one of the architects involved, responsible. David hires him as a gardener. When Elaine gets a job as a music producer, she hires Mrs. Bronski to babysit, but their daughter soon shows signs of distress.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

A psychopathic couple seeks revenge on an architect whom the husband holds responsible for a construction-site accident that cost him his arm and caused the deaths of seven workers. Elaine and David Briand, a couple in their forties, live in a hamlet near the Swiss border. They inhabit a large, very modern-style house, but it is extremely isolated. The setting is bleak, with constant rain. Elaine dislikes the house, but David designed it, and the residence is his professional showcase. The couple is going through a crisis: David is in financial difficulty. He is rarely around, occupied with work elsewhere. Elaine is bored and regrets leaving an important job in Paris. She dislikes being socially isolated and having to deal with financial worries! On an otherwise ordinary rainy day, the Bronskis, a disabled man and his wife, park their caravan in front of the couple’s property—and not by chance: he has lost an arm and walks with a limp following a construction-site accident in which seven other workers were killed. Briand was one of the architects responsible for the accident. But the matter was covered up. Bronsky brings up the accident and puts moral pressure on David. The architect then feels compelled to hire him as a gardener to get him out of poverty. A friend offers Elaine a job as a music producer, her former profession, and the income comes at just the right time. However, she has to leave her daughter with a babysitter, and Mrs. Bronski seems suitable for the job since she has a little girl of her own. Elaine’s work and her daily train journeys take her away from her daughter. She comes home late. Gradually, when the child begins showing signs of distress, the Briands become concerned about the Bronskis’ behavior, and Elaine decides to find a different babysitter...
