A Vatican conspiracy to preserve clerical power collides with the strained friendship between a reform-minded pope and an embittered former theologian.
The story
In the 1980s, the Vatican becomes the setting for a conspiracy targeting Pope Giovanni Clemente I, formerly Monsignor Andreani. His advocacy of a Church of the poor and plans to issue the encyclical Renovatio Ecclesiae have alarmed cardinals who believe his reforms threaten the Church. The conflict is bound up with his longstanding friendship with Don Bruno Martello, once a dissenting theologian and now an embittered hardliner. As the pope and Martello grow divided by their outlooks, the Vatican's covert effort to preserve clerical power shapes the danger surrounding them.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
It is the 1980s, and the Vatican is the setting for a conspiracy centered on Pope Giovanni Clemente I, formerly Monsignor Andreani. The pontiff is under fire for his revolutionary ways and his vision of a Church of the poor, for the poor. In the cardinals’ view, a pope so revolutionary, who is about to issue the encyclical Renovatio Ecclesiae, can only bring about the Church’s destruction and must therefore be stopped. Against the backdrop of these events is the longstanding friendship between the pontiff and Don Bruno Martello, once a dissenting theologian and now an embittered, dangerous hardliner. Their differences in outlook fatally strain the relationship between the two men: Don Martello’s violent actions, driven by his determination to punish the pope as an example to others, will be influenced by the Vatican’s covert conspiracy to preserve clerical power.
