Don Pedro decides to arrange a match for Claudio and Hero at a party, while also attempting to pair up the sharp-tongued Beatrice and Benedick. Full plot (contains spoilers)

Don Pedro of Aragon and his noblemen visit Leonato in Messina, where Claudio is in love with Leonato's daughter, Hero. Don Pedro arranges a match for them at a party while simultaneously trying to pair up the bickering Beatrice and Benedick. The group engages in 'gulling'—staging fake conversations to trick Beatrice and Benedick into believing they are loved. Meanwhile, Don John conspires to ruin Hero's reputation by arranging a fake tryst between her and a servant. On the wedding night, Don John shows Don Pedro and Claudio a staged scene of infidelity, leading Claudio to publicly humiliate Hero. A bumbling constable, Dogberry, eventually catches the conspirators and forces a confession. To save Hero's honor, the Friar suggests a ruse where it is claimed she died of grief. During this time, Beatrice and Benedick confess their love. Eventually, the truth of Don John's plot is revealed, Hero is found alive, and the two couples are united in marriage.
