The film explores the origin story of Mufasa and his complex relationship with his brother Taka.

The story

In the present, Rafiki recounts the legendary history of Mufasa to Simba and Nala's cub, Kiara. The story takes us back years earlier to a coastal desert where a young, orphaned Mufasa lives with his parents. After a devastating flash flood, Mufasa is swept into a wetland where he meets Taka, a royal cub. The two are raised together in a pride, despite the prejudices of the elders. As they grow, they must navigate the challenges of survival and the looming threat of a rival group of lions, while forging a bond that will shape the future of the Pride Lands.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The narrative begins with Rafiki telling the story of Mufasa to Kiara, Timon, and Pumbaa. The flashback reveals Mufasa as a cub in a coastal desert. After a flood separates him from his parents, he is found by Taka's family. Taka and Mufasa are raised together, and Taka intentionally loses a test of strength to ensure Mufasa can stay. They eventually flee to a new land to escape a growing threat from the 'Outsiders,' led by Kiros. During their journey, they meet Sarabi and Rafiki. Taka falls for Sarabi but becomes jealous of Mufasa's role in her life. Taka eventually betrays Mufasa by allying with Kiros. During a final confrontation in a cave, Taka intervenes to save Mufasa from Kiros, resulting in Taka being scarred. Mufasa becomes King of Milele and forgives Taka, who takes the name 'Scar' to mark his actions. In the present, Kiara joins her family, and the story of her grandfather concludes.
