When the sheep Wolke is kidnapped by the wolf Maitre Wolf, a fox tells the farm animals that the wolf intends to eat her at his birthday celebration. Rooster Franz and pig Waldemar set out to rescue Wolke, and Johnny is compelled to accompany them because everyone believes his heroic stories. Their journey takes them toward the wolf’s island home, where the water-shy Waldemar faces an especially daunting challenge.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After the mouse Johnny’s attempts to make a career as an actor fail, he arrives at Mullewapp farm, where he entertains the other animals with stories about his supposed adventures. One day, the sheep Wolke is kidnapped by the wolf Maitre Wolf. A fox whom Maitre beat up because he was afraid of being eaten and didn’t want to come to the wolf’s birthday party tells them that Maitre plans to eat Wolke as roast lamb on his birthday. The rooster Franz and the pig Waldemar set out on a rescue mission. Johnny, whom everyone considers a great hero because of his stories, is forced to join them. To the water-shy Waldemar’s horror, Maitre lives on an island. But as they head for the shore on their bicycles, an accident leaves Waldemar in a boat, and they set off for the island in it. Meanwhile, Maitre Wolf chains Wolke up, and she unwillingly witnesses his daily life. Maitre, an enthusiastic cook, lives with his servant, an old billy goat, in a magnificent villa on the island. For his amusement, he kidnaps songbirds and locks them in a cage so they can entertain him with their singing while he eats. When they reach the wolf’s villa, however, Johnny gets scared. He admits to Franz and Waldemar that he made up his stories and leaves them. The two knock on Maitre’s door without him. The wolf warmly welcomes them and invites them in as his guests. But when he finds recipes for roosters and pigs in his cookbook, he puts them in the pot with Wolke, intending to eat them as a three-course birthday meal. After seeing the wolf prepare his friends, Johnny plucks up his courage: he rings the doorbell and, fighting the wolf, makes his way into the kitchen, where he tips over the cooking pot and frees his friends. Together, they tie Maitre up and free the songbirds, too. But the hungry wolf breaks free and chases them to the shore. There, Franz starts flying and carries the others over the water by their feet. Maitre follows them in his boat. But when it sinks because of a leak, he drowns. That evening, the whole farm celebrates Wolke’s return and that of the three friends. Although he really is a hero now, Johnny feels uncomfortable and wants to leave, but Franz and Waldemar follow him on their bicycles and persuade him to stay.
