Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1981, Little League teammates Neil and Brian are both sexually abused by their coach in Hutchinson, Kansas. Neil, who is discovering his own homosexuality, views the abuse as love, while Brian suffers from physical symptoms and a lack of memory of the event. Years later, Neil moves to New York City and works as a prostitute until a traumatic encounter with a dying client leads him to seek a different life. Meanwhile, Brian becomes obsessed with the idea of alien abduction to cope with his trauma, eventually meeting a woman who also claims to have had an encounter. Brian eventually finds a photo of his old team and recognizes Neil. During a Christmas visit to Hutchinson, the two men finally meet. Neil reveals the truth of that night: the coach forced them to perform sex acts on each other. Brian realizes his alien fantasies were a coping mechanism for the abuse he endured, and the two find solace in each other's presence as they confront their shared past.
