The story
As Berlin prepares for the Pope’s visit, three mismatched couples spend a sleepless night in the capital. Homeless Hanna finds 100 marks in her begging bowl, though she does not see who put them there. She and her partner Viktor hope to spend the money on a hotel room. Patty, a heroin-addicted prostitute, has a client visiting from the countryside. Meanwhile, businessman Peschke is waiting for a guest at the airport when he encounters a young Angolan refugee boy who will not leave him alone. Their separate encounters unfold against the city’s preparations for the papal visit.

Berlin is preparing for the Pope’s visit, but the three mismatched couples who wander sleepless through the capital in this film do not experience a holy night. The homeless Hanna has 100 marks thrown into her begging bowl, without seeing who did it. The homeless couple Hanna and Viktor then want to use the 100 marks to spend a night in a hotel; Patty, a heroin-addicted prostitute, has a client from the countryside; and the businessman Peschke, waiting for a guest at the airport, encounters a small Angolan refugee boy he cannot get rid of.
