A prospective buyer’s overnight stay at a house in the Lüneburg Heath grows unsettling as its solitary owner keeps him guessing.
The story
Jan Eckmann, visiting from Hamburg, is interested in buying a house in the Lüneburg Heath. Its solitary owner, Elena Berg, behaves strangely, and their difficult conversation lasts until midnight. He accepts her offer and stays overnight, captivated by Elena, who is dressed entirely in black. But the house unsettles him: he sees her burning papers and clothing, finds one room kept locked to him, and gets no explanation for the covered Mercedes convertible in the horse stable. Unable to sleep, Jan hears nighttime noises and notices silent shadows, while the house and its owner remain mysterious.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A house in the Lüneburg Heath is up for sale. Jan Eckmann, from Hamburg, is very interested. But the solitary owner behaves strangely, and the conversation is difficult. By the time it is over, it is midnight. Even so, he accepts her offer and stays the night. The mysterious resident, Elena Berg, dressed entirely in black, has irrevocably enchanted him. He can barely sleep. Not only did he see her burning papers and articles of clothing during the viewing, but one of the rooms was also kept locked to him. And Elena would not explain what the Mercedes convertible under a tarpaulin in the horse stable was all about, either. Now the nighttime noises and silent shadows complete the spell. Eckmann is drawn ever deeper into a vortex of dark secrets. He should have made up his mind long ago—and gone back to his job. But he stays another night. That night is one long nightmare. The beautiful Elena does come to his room, but only to kiss his own grave in his fevered fantasies, like a messenger of death. Eckmann is in shock, and shortly afterward he finds Elena in the convertible, ready to give herself to him, as though she had been waiting there just for him. The house has become a trap for Eckmann. He is irretrievably entangled in Elena’s world. The next morning, she is like a different person: suddenly wearing a transparent floral dress and courting him like a cheerful woman in love. So they take a trip to a nearby moorland lake. But the bog is deadly.
