A lifelong caregiver and a submissive live-in helper find themselves bound together by family duty in a village.
The story
Aunt Flora, 73, has spent her life caring for others. After her parents die, her younger sister and her husband are killed in a traffic accident, leaving Flora to raise their three daughters. Years later, after the nieces have grown up and left the village, Flora takes in her elderly Aunt Benita. Indignant that none of the nieces return to help, Flora receives another kind of assistance: they hire Purita, a quiet, hardworking woman from far away who had come to work the grape harvest and stayed. Purita moves in with Flora and Benita, bringing a new presence into the household shaped by obligation and unequal expectations.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Aunt Flora (Petra Martínez) is a 73-year-old woman who has always had to look after other people. She never married because she was never particularly interested in men, but that meant that whenever any relative needed someone to care for them, they always ended up turning to her. First it was her parents, with whom she never stopped living, so looking after them until they both died seemed like the most natural thing in the world. But after that, her only sister, who was much younger than her and had moved to the capital and started a family there, also died along with her husband in a traffic accident. So Aunt Flora found herself alone, unmarried, in her fifties, and with three nieces aged between 8 and 15 to look after. More recently, once the girls had grown up and left the village, she also had to care for her Aunt Benita, who was unmarried like her and very long-lived. Flora took the elderly woman in without complaint, although she was indignant that none of her nieces had even considered moving back to the village to lend her a hand. The three nieces, for their part, helped in the way they thought made the most sense: by finding another woman to help Flora and paying her to live with Flora and the elderly woman. This woman is Purita (Adriana Ozores), a veritable saint: hardworking, submissive, quiet, obedient... almost like a slave. Purita is not from Flora’s family’s village, or even from the same region. She came from far away to work the grape harvest and stayed forever.
