A divorced mother in a small town near the Caspian Sea seeks marriage while risking the custody arrangement that lets her raise her son.
The story
Nahid, a young divorced mother, lives alone with her 10-year-old son in a small town near the Caspian Sea. Under Iranian tradition, custody would normally go to the father, but Nahid’s former husband has allowed their son to remain with her on the condition that she not remarry. Nahid nevertheless wants to marry another man. One possible arrangement is a sigheh, a temporary marriage that is not widely accepted socially. Her desire to build a new relationship therefore puts the fragile terms of her custody arrangement in conflict with her hopes for the future.
