When a folk high school is turned into an internment camp for German refugees, its head’s family faces a difficult choice: help them or stay out of it.
The story
Just before and just after Denmark’s liberation in the spring of 1945, hundreds of thousands of German refugees come to the country. The family of the head of Ryslinge Folk High School on Funen faces a dilemma when the school becomes an internment camp for German refugees. Should the family go against public opinion and help the refugees, or stay out of it and make its opposition to the Germans clear? Inspired by real events, the story draws on a less-examined chapter in Danish history and presents a situation in which people may face difficult moral choices.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film is inspired by real events and deals with one of the less-examined chapters in Danish history: the handling of the hundreds of thousands of German refugees who came to Denmark just before and just after the liberation of Denmark in the spring of 1945. The family of the head of Ryslinge Folk High School on Funen faces a dilemma when the school is turned into an internment camp for German refugees. Should the family go against public opinion and help the many refugees, or stay out of it and make their opposition to the Germans clear? The film is thus a World War II drama about a nation’s soul under pressure, in which each person may be forced to make difficult moral choices.
