Two gravediggers move through a surreal, self-aware story where characters can rewrite the film as they please.
The story
Gravediggers Kapa and Pepe encounter two old men, Uncle Miki and Uncle Gyula, in a cemetery, where the pair philosophize about life among the dead. The old men have the privilege of rewriting any part of the film, though they would rather smoke their pipes than use it. Meanwhile, the third gravedigger, Józsi, gets married. As a bard sings, events begin accelerating, leaving Pepe struggling to keep up with the rapid changes around him.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Two gravediggers, Kapa (Zoltán Mucsi) and Pepe (Péter Scherer), find two old men in the cemetery: Uncle Miki (Miklós Jancsó) and Uncle Gyula (Gyula Hernádi), who are philosophizing about life among the dead. They do not much want to make use of their privilege of being able to rewrite any part of the film however they like. They would rather just smoke their pipes. The third gravedigger, Józsi (József Szarvas), gets married, but shoots his wife at the wedding. Along with the bard’s singing, events speed up so much that Pepe—and we with him—can barely keep up. The filmmakers are killed, but come back to life. Kapa first becomes a company executive and family man, sees through Zsoltika and Anger’s plan, and kills them; after that, he becomes a gangster boss who has Pepe shot. The gravedigger’s dying wish is that the names of King Solomon and himself be switched in the Bible. Finally, Ganxta Zolee and András Lovasi sing too, and Pepe gallops on a white horse toward a better world, while the director gets soaked…
