A Roman consul’s effort to bring Queen Zenobia under Rome’s rule is upended by a sudden attack on Palmyra.
The story
Queen Zenobia has long faced Rome’s destructive presence in her kingdom. Consul Marcus Valerius repeatedly tries to reach her through her friends, hoping to persuade her to annex Palmyra to Rome and accept tributary status. His plan seems close to success, but General Marcellus orders a sudden attack on the city. Zenobia had already sought support from Syria and Persia in case war came, and the conflict between Rome and Palmyra becomes unavoidable.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Queen Zenobia has been threatened for years by Rome’s destructive presence. After many failed attempts, Consul Marcus Valerius once again tries to get close to Zenobia’s friends, in order to persuade her to annex her kingdom to Rome and become its tributary. Valerius’s plan is almost about to succeed, were it not for General Marcellus, who orders a sudden attack on Palmyra. As if that were not enough, Queen Zenobia had already asked Syria and Persia some time earlier to support her in the event of war. The clash is extremely violent, but in the end Zenobia loses and is taken to Rome. As planned, Marcus Valerius has the captive acquitted and keeps her in his house as a slave and concubine, while an African successor, chosen by Rome, prepares to take over the rule of Palmyra.
