Full plot (contains spoilers)
It is the summer of 1989 on the German-Dutch border. In Germany, the Berlin Wall is tottering, and all of Europe is anxiously awaiting events. Sixteen-year-old Nena spends most of her time with her father, Martin, who has MS. He is in a wheelchair and can move only his head and one arm. She talks, plays chess, and sings songs with him. When Nena joins the local baseball team, she falls in love with Carlo, the pitcher. With him, she experiences her first romance and sexual relationship. One day, Nena is called out of class by her mother, Martha. Her father has made an unsuccessful suicide attempt and is in the hospital. She accidentally learns that this was not his first attempt to end his life. She is deeply hurt by his wish to die. After the incident, as she begins to see her father differently, she increasingly realizes how unhappy he is. While she herself becomes more and more eager to live, her father's life grows ever more hopeless. He wants to die, but is physically unable to end his life on his own, and his brothers refuse to help. So, to help her father fulfill his final wish, Nena gets a few planks. After they walk together to a suitable place, she lays the planks across the railway tracks so her father can propel his wheelchair onto the tracks by himself. Once he is on the tracks and remains there, she kisses him goodbye and runs away in tears.
