The story
Nina and Robert von der Heyden have been married for 16 years, and Nina has put aside her own ambitions—including her career as a lawyer—to support her husband’s political life. When she learns that Robert plans to seek another term as mayor despite promising not to, she loses her temper. Discovering his affair with Jacqueline, his French PR adviser, makes her want to leave. But an old party friend and the sight of Robert’s smiling election posters persuade Nina to run against him. Her experience in local politics, particularly environmental activism, gives her a basis for the campaign, while their daughter Alice is unhappy about the public contest.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Nina and Robert von der Heyden have been married for 16 years. It has been a happy time, but also one of sacrifice for Nina, as in recent years her life has been limited to being a housewife. She had to give up her career as a lawyer for her husband’s sake. Since he had promised her that, after three terms as mayor, he would not run for a fourth, Nina always put her own needs aside. Now she learns on television that, contrary to his promise, her husband Robert is running for election again, and she loses her temper. And things get even worse when she catches him having an affair with Jacqueline, his French PR adviser. Nina really just wants to get away. But the false smile on her husband’s election posters and her old party friend Philipp persuade her to run against him herself. She can draw on her experience as a local politician, where she was especially active in the environmental movement. The press hypes up and sensationalizes the power struggle between the married couple. Their daughter, Alice, is not at all pleased about it. When Nina also manages to uncover an environmental scandal in which her husband is not entirely uninvolved, the mudslinging and election projections enter their decisive phase.
