When a teenager is accused of murdering an eleven-year-old, online outrage and suspicion threaten to overwhelm his family before the evidence is fully examined.

The story

After eleven-year-old Fabian is abused and murdered, police suspect sixteen-year-old Daniel Gudermann, who was seen near the crime scene. When officers arrive to speak with him, Daniel runs away and is arrested in front of his neighbors; a classmate films the arrest, and the video soon spreads online. The town quickly treats him as guilty, and a public smear campaign targets Daniel and his family. As the media and community pressure mount, homicide squad chief Udo Mathias stays measured, while inspector Leonie Ahrens seeks a confession. Daniel’s mother insists he is innocent, but his father begins to doubt him as the evidence against him appears troubling.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Eleven-year-old Fabian has been abused and murdered. Because eyewitnesses saw 16-year-old Daniel Gudermann near the crime scene, the police want to arrest him. When the police ring the Gudermanns’ doorbell and ask to speak to Daniel, he runs away—and makes himself look suspicious. He is taken away in front of the neighbors. A classmate films him. Shortly afterward, the video of Daniel’s arrest appears online. The townspeople have reached their verdict: Daniel must be the murderer. An unbearable smear campaign against him, his parents Claudia and Ulli, and his siblings Emma and Theo begins. Despite pressure from the public and the media, homicide squad chief Udo Mathias remains composed. The young chief inspector Leonie Ahrens, however, wants to quickly prove that Daniel is the perpetrator. His alibi has fallen apart, and there is evidence from the crime scene on his clothes. She is counting on him to confess. While his mother defends Daniel tooth and nail and believes he is innocent, his father grows suspicious—especially when he finds a website for gay men on Daniel’s laptop. The family’s life is turned upside down. When a police officer examines the evidence again, it becomes apparent that Daniel is probably innocent. Photos showing the perpetrator reveal that he was wearing a jacket with a club logo. This leads the police to Tobias Sauer. He confesses to the crime. Daniel is then released from pretrial detention and taken home. There, he has a confrontation with his father. Daniel cannot forgive him for doubting his innocence. Shortly after the argument, he leaves the house and runs to the lake. His sister Emma follows him, and he confesses to her that he was at the lake at the time of the crime because he wanted to finally tell the neighbors’ son Sven, who regularly went running there, how he felt about him. But he never got the chance, because Sven was out with his younger sister that day. At the end of the film, Daniel goes back to school.
