Full plot (contains spoilers)
A surreal fairy tale is told. Little Jonas loses his father in a fishing village. The poor boy is mocked and, by the strict clergyman Ekdahl, punished more than he is taught. Only through meeting the magician Grido does Jonas learn to laugh and dream again. The boy believes he has discovered that this world is merely a fragile illusion concealing something fantastic behind it, something not everyone can see.
