Three teenage friends embark on a chaotic road trip from Kansas City to Los Angeles after believing they have been chosen to open for Green Day.
The story
On December 20, best friends Tommy and Fred decide to ditch the last day of school to pursue their dreams as musicians in their band, the Analog Dogs. After failing to see Green Day in their hometown, they are led to believe by a friend that they have been chosen to open for the band at a New Year's Eve concert in Los Angeles. Driven by this opportunity, the two friends, along with their more reserved bandmate Chad, embark on a journey from Kansas City to Los Angeles. The trip quickly becomes a series of mishaps as they navigate mechanical failures, lost items, and the complexities of their shared ambition.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Tommy and Fred, members of the band Analog Dogs, believe a prank by their friend Keith that they will open for Green Day in Los Angeles. They take a car without permission and travel toward the city, facing obstacles like a broken car, a lost phone, and a stint in an ice cream truck. Along the way, they encounter others, perform at a venue called the Hole, and deal with Fred's mushroom-induced hallucinations. Chad initially leaves the group due to frustration but eventually rejoins them for the final leg of the journey. They reach the concert and, despite the revelation that the opening slot was a prank, they stay. Fred is invited onto the stage to play guitar with Green Day, and the band eventually receives an offer from Green Day to record their music, giving them a chance to become a real punk-rock band.
