After a coup d'état is initiated by armed rebels, the Dwyers find themselves trapped in a hotel during the ensuing violence. Jack manages to get his family to the roof, but they are soon forced to flee to a neighboring building. They navigate the anarchy-ridden streets on a stolen moped, attempting to reach the American embassy, only to find it abandoned. They take refuge in a Buddhist shrine, where they are confronted by rebels. During a tense standoff, they are joined by Hammond and Kenny, who help them escape to a nearby safe house. After a series of dangerous encounters and the loss of their companions, the Dwyers reach a river and find a boat. They are pursued by the rebel leader, Samnang, and his men.
