In Phoenix, Arizona, 18-year-old wrestler Robert "Bobby" Tennison begins a relationship with 16-year-old Stacy Collins. While they share a bond over their shared experiences of abandonment, Bobby's behavior becomes increasingly possessive and violent. Stacy suffers physical abuse, including being slammed into walls and a truck, but she hides the bruises from her friends and family. After a series of escalating incidents, Stacy attempts to break off the relationship. However, Bobby lures her to a lake under the guise of a social outing. He eventually murders her by slitting her throat. When Stacy goes missing, her mother, Laura, and her friend, Nicki, begin a search. Nicki eventually discovers the truth about the abuse and the fact that Bobby and his friend Vince took Stacy to the lake. During a police interrogation, Bobby initially refuses to cooperate but eventually confesses to the murder. Stacy's body is found in the lake, and Bobby is convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. The film concludes with a court lecture to Stacy's classmates regarding their inaction in the face of her abuse.
