When a diplomat’s wife falls in love with another care-home resident, their family gathering for a golden anniversary is thrown into disarray.
The story
Retired diplomat Octave Saint-Cast has invited distinguished guests to the sumptuous Château de La Rolandière to celebrate his golden wedding anniversary with Alix, whose Alzheimer’s disease has left her partly forgetful of him. When their daughter Dora arrives at the care home to collect Alix, she finds her mother with Farhad, an Iranian patient who has fallen in love with her. Farhad’s son and granddaughter are also present, so Dora brings the entire group to the château. Their unexpected arrival astonishes the family already assembled there and leaves Octave concerned about his wife as well as the high-profile guests expected in two days.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Octave Saint-Cast, a retired diplomat, has invited a distinguished crowd to celebrate his golden wedding anniversary with Alix at the sumptuous Château de La Rolandière. Alix has Alzheimer’s disease and has, to some extent, forgotten him. But when their daughter Dora comes to collect her from the care home where she lives, she is surprised to find Alix in the arms of Farhad, an Iranian patient with whom she has fallen in love. Since Farhad’s son and granddaughter are also there, Dora takes the whole group to the château, to the astonishment of the family already gathered there. The elderly diplomat is equally worried about his wife and about the distinguished guests—including former president Valéry Giscard d’Estaing—who are due to arrive the day after tomorrow.
