An aging German composer summoned to Rome to write eight nocturnes finds grief and the ghosts of war silencing his music.

The story

An old German composer arrives in Rome after the king summons him to compose eight nocturnes. The commission brings him to a city already burdened with personal history: his wife died there years earlier, and memories of her return as he tries to work. He is also haunted by the war years surrounding his birth. These recollections and ghosts weigh on him so heavily that he cannot compose. The plot description establishes the conflict between the royal commission and the composer’s inability to create, but does not say whether he eventually completes the music.
