A northern-route expedition becomes trapped in sea ice off Novaya Zemlya, forcing its crew to overwinter on the island.

The story

In 1596, Willem Barentsz and Jacob van Heemskerck lead an expedition seeking a northern route to the Indies, following a proposal by cartographer and clergyman Petrus Plancius. Off the coast of Novaya Zemlya, their ship becomes trapped in sea ice, leaving the men stranded on the island for the winter. They must shelter in Het Behouden Huys, built from the ship’s timber. The story is told through Gerrit de Veer’s perspective, and the film is loosely based on the journal he later published.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Reinout Oerlemans’s film romanticizes the final expedition (1596–1597) of Willem Barentsz and Jacob van Heemskerck, who set out to discover the route “around the North” to the Indies, as proposed by the cartographer and clergyman Petrus Plancius. But off the coast of Novaya Zemlya, their ship became trapped in the sea ice, leaving them and their crew stranded on the island, where they had to spend the winter in Het Behouden Huys, built from the wood of their ship. The story is told through the eyes of Gerrit de Veer and is loosely based on the famous journal he later published. A romance between Gerrit de Veer and Plancius’s daughter (played by Doutzen Kroes) has been added. The film depicts the Nova Zembla effect (described by De Veer on January 24, 1597), albeit in a non-historical way.
