In a death-dream, Friedrich von Hardenberg’s encounter with Sophie von Kühn, who becomes his muse, sets him on a path toward becoming a poet and thinker.

The story

In a kind of death-dream, Friedrich von Hardenberg (Novalis) relives his life and work. Suppressed by his father, he is called to order and reminded of his responsibility to preserve the family line. At first, he desperately tries to turn his attention to so-called worldly matters and takes on a public office, while his uncle (Großkreuz) attempts to teach him a new poetry of war. Questions about love, intimacy, the German character, and the heaviness of life torment him. His encounter with twelve-year-old Sophie von Kühn, who becomes his muse, suddenly sets him on the path to becoming a liberated poet and thinker.

In the end, Friedrich rejects both. Questions about love, intimacy, the German character, and the heaviness of life torment him. His encounter with twelve-year-old Sophie von Kühn, who becomes his muse, suddenly sets him on the path to becoming a liberated poet and thinker. Euphoria and an exploration of the metaphysical follow, until she dies. Their marriage takes place only in a dream. For him as a Romantic, the blue flower, symbolizing their eternal love for each other, represents their union in an ideal that reaches beyond death.
