Full plot (contains spoilers)

The young waitress Nina is broke. Her boss, Pavel, the restaurant owner, would like to lend her money, but she refuses. She continues to live with her grandmother, who has dementia, in a small house in the countryside. Hannes is about to marry his fiancée, Karen, but they actually have quite different interests: Karen enjoys adventurous challenges, while Hannes is more the conservative type, preferring to keep everything in order and avoid any fuss. Nina is supposed to handle the wedding preparations. After some initial misunderstandings and arguments, Hannes grows close to Karen again, and the two decide to go ahead with their wedding after all, even though it had been called off earlier. On his way to the church, Hannes sees a convoy of emergency vehicles and realizes that Nina’s grandmother, to whom she was always very close, has died. At Nina’s grandmother’s funeral, Tom, who had been Nina’s lover in the meantime, hands her a note out of guilt. On it is a message Hannes had written to her. Nina flees her grandmother’s funeral and drives her car to the church at the speed of fire engines with their sirens on. Hannes is just about to marry Karen. Before Nina arrives, Hannes has already refused to say “I do” and leaves the church. Outside the church, he meets Nina, who has just arrived. Hannes and Nina declare their love for each other and, at the end of the film, marry to the great applause of the guests in attendance.
