The story
Václav, a beloved village teacher, watches Princess Amálie from afar, while she would rather escape the castle to skate on a frozen lake than attend to courtly duties. In the sky, Proxima desires Sirius, who instead announces plans to become engaged to the somewhat naive star Denička, who admires him. Jealous Proxima tricks Denička into falling to Earth, and she crashes through the roof of Václav’s cottage. She meets him there and stays with him, though he is initially far from pleased.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The beloved village teacher Václav often watches Princess Amálie from a distance. She would rather flee the castle to skate on the frozen lake than take an interest in her courtly duties, much to her mother the Queen’s distress. Václav, however, does not admit his feelings for the princess. The stars in the sky have entirely different concerns: Proxima has her eye on Sirius, who does not desire her and announces his intention to become engaged to the somewhat naive star Denička. She looks up to him, while Nameless watches from Sirius’s shadow. Jealous Proxima tricks Denička into falling from the starry sky to Earth, hoping to get her out of the way. Denička crashes through the roof straight into Václav’s cottage. That is how she meets him—and ends up staying with him, more or less, though at first he is not at all pleased about it. As time passes, however, the star grows dimmer on Earth until she disintegrates completely into stardust. She can replenish her dwindling energy by being in the presence of someone who feels sincere, selfless love. Denička discovers this when she sees Václav gazing at the princess, so she tries to help Václav and Princess Amálie find love. Meanwhile, in the sky, Sirius has not even noticed Denička’s absence, while his henchman Nameless searches for her. He discovers that she has fallen to Earth and tries to persuade Sirius to go and save her. When Proxima finds out, she instead offers herself to the ruling Moon to be sent on the rescue mission. She takes the White Dwarf with her as an assistant; he has long pursued Proxima’s favor in vain and is utterly devoted to her. Sirius is more concerned with his dazzling reflection in the mirror, so only Nameless sets off for Earth. On Earth, Václav and the princess grow fond of each other, and Proxima tries to prevent this so that she can destroy Denička once and for all. The Queen is not pleased by the thought of her daughter having anything to do with a village teacher either; she is planning an engagement ball for her and has invited noble suitors. And it is during the ball that many things become clear. The Queen realizes that the noble princes are each more dreadful than the last, so even a simple teacher will ultimately be a better match for the princess. Denička realizes that Sirius does not return her admiration and recognizes Nameless’s sincere feelings for her. The White Dwarf reaches a similar realization when he sees that Proxima has been using him all along to win Sirius. And, as is often the case in fairy tales, everything works out well in the end.
