Full plot (contains spoilers)
The beautiful but stubborn Princess Julie (Lucie Tomková) is supposed to marry the wealthy but much older Prince Hubert for reasons of state. But she escapes from the castle, initially aided in secret by local children she enjoyed playing with. On her journey, she meets the young comedian Franta Kuldan (Petr Mikula), followed by two good-natured spirits, Mulisák (Václav Babka) and the water sprite Brčál (Jindřich Bonaventura). Eventually, she finds refuge with a small traveling circus, while her father (Oldřich Vlach) sends soldiers to search for her. At her hideout, the princess meets Franta again and falls in love with him. Posters and royal heralds reveal Julie’s true identity and that whoever finds her will be allowed to marry her. Dejmor, the malicious circus owner, also discovers the truth. At first, he cannot use it to his advantage because the devil he is indebted to intends to take him to hell. By pretending to be ill, Dejmor manages to switch places with Franta, condemning Franta to the underworld. Julie follows him and, with help from both spirits, completes three tasks set by Lucifer (Gustav Opočenský) in exchange for the young man’s release. Meanwhile, Dejmor tells the king where his daughter is and demands her hand in marriage. The ruler and his wife (Taťana Fischerová) secretly attend another performance and then reveal themselves to their daughter. She begs her parents to let her marry Franta, but the circus owner demands that the ruler keep his promise. The devil then arrives and takes Dejmor away. Julie is allowed to marry Franta and continue performing in the ring.
