A defiant trainee who challenges his parachute-course instructors must face the fear that keeps him from making his first jump.

The story

Willi Zubrodt is assigned by his department to a parachute-training course run by the GST. His lax attitude toward discipline, lack of respect for the instructors, and failure to fit in prompt them to try to expose his shortcomings and force him out. Their attempts to show that he lacks theoretical knowledge or physical fitness fail, and Zubrodt turns the tables on them. Still, his disciplinary offenses leave his place in the course uncertain. When the first parachute jump is about to take place, fear keeps him aboard the plane.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Willi Zubrodt is assigned by his department to a parachute-training course run by the GST. Because he is lax about discipline, shows no respect for the instructors, and does not fit in with the group, the instructors try to expose him and force him out of the course. Their attempts to prove that he has gaps in his theoretical knowledge and physical fitness fail completely, however. Each time, Zubrodt manages to turn the tables on them. Nevertheless, because of his disciplinary offenses, the GST district leadership is to decide whether he can remain in the course. But when the first parachute jump is about to take place, Zubrodt stays on the plane out of fear. On a later flight, his comrades help him along. Having landed far outside the target area, Zubrodt is driven by a woman to the vicinity of the training camp. At the airfield administration, it turns out that the woman is Christine Linde, from the GST district leadership. Since she has grown sympathetic to Zubrodt, she decides to give him a second chance. When Zubrodt’s colleagues visit the training site to see their “hero” parachute-jump, he takes off with Christine Linde for another flight. The jump is supposed to be called off because of the weather, but Zubrodt jumps anyway, and Christine Linde follows him. While a search is launched at the training site, Zubrodt and Linde, who have landed far from the target, grow closer. Later, Christine Linde gets a lift in a car, while Zubrodt has to continue his way back on foot. Plagued by self-doubt, he passes a construction site where a woman is trying to get into a locked site hut. When he realizes that a sick child is involved, he steals a heavy truck and drives the child to the hospital. The instructors and his department head eventually find him there. In the final scene, Christine Linde and Willi Zubrodt are seen jumping from an airplane as a bride and groom.
