A coal miner's son finds inspiration in the stars and pursues a dream of rocketry against the backdrop of a struggling mining community.

The story

In 1957, the launch of Sputnik 1 inspires 17-year-old Homer Hickam, a resident of a West Virginia mining community, to build his own rockets. Despite the skepticism of his father, who wants him to work in the family coal mine, Homer assembles a team of friends to pursue rocketry. Supported by their teacher, the boys begin launching rockets, facing challenges from the local mining company and the dangers of the work. After a series of setbacks and a tragic accident involving their mentor, Homer must navigate the conflict between his family's expectations and his personal ambition to reach the stars.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957, Homer Hickam becomes obsessed with rocketry. He forms a team with friends Roy Lee Cooke, Sherman O'Dell, and Quentin Wilson, under the guidance of teacher Freida J. Riley. Their efforts are hampered by Homer's father, John, who demands he work in the local coal mine. Following a series of explosions and a tragic accident that kills their mentor, Ike Bykovsky, Homer is forced to work in the mine while his father recovers. However, inspired by Miss Riley, Homer studies rocket science and eventually proves their rockets were not responsible for a local fire. He returns to school, wins a science fair, and travels to Indianapolis for a national competition. Despite a stolen component, he wins the top prize and receives multiple scholarship offers. He returns home to find Miss Riley dying and eventually leads his friends in a final, successful launch of a rocket named after her. The film concludes with the revelation that all the boys went to college and Homer became a NASA engineer.
